Establishing child support in Washington is relatively straight forward in Washington State. The income of the parents are totaled and the percentage that each has to the total is established. A support schedule is then examined to determine what the support will be for both parents. Support will then be established based upon each parent’s percentage of the child support figure.
Spousal maintenance is not as straight forward as child support. There is no schedule and few guidelines. The court looks at the overall picture to determine if spousal maintenance is warranted. The court will look at the length of the marriage, the manner in which each spouse was accustomed to living, the income each enjoys through their employment, and the like. The court will then establish spousal maintenance that it fees is most equitable under the circumstances.
